Is HDMI better than digital optical, TosLink, or Coaxial for audio? The simple answer is no. But there is a lot of mis-information on the internet about HDMI quality so here is also the complicated answer: HDMI audio quality is equal to digital optical, TosLink, and Coaxial digital audio in every way. The audio quality is not better or worse. HDMI, digital optical, TosLink, and Coaxial cables are all digital formats meaning they only carry electrons that represent a 0 or a 1. And one type of cable is not better than the other because any one cable cannot improve the quality of a 0 or a 1. The benefit of using HDMI is for video. HDMI carries both digital video and digital audio signals.
